In Kyoto there are 14 shrines, many temples and the famous Nijo castle. Also there are Byodo-in and Ujigami shrines in Uji city, Kyoto prefecture and Enryaku-ji temple in Otsu city, Shiga prefecture. These are all well worth a visit if you are interested in Japanese history, Buddhism and period architecture. They are very accessible, being as they are, only a short car drive from 2 major airports.
