Mitarashi Festival

This is a unique ritual whereby devotees bathe their feet to protect against plague and misfortune. Thousands of people flock to the pond in front of Mitarashi shrine for this very reason. In addition to these acts of devotion, many people also receive ‘Mitarashi’ Dango’ :sticky rice balls covered in a sweet soy sauce glaze.

Period: about 8 days before and after ‘Doyo no Ushi no hi’ (late July – early August)
