Dazaifu Tenmangu is a Shinto shrine located in Dazaifu city. It is dedicated to the memory of Sugawara Michizane (845-903) - god of academic achievement. In 901 A.D. Michizane was suddenly exiled into Dazaifu where he died two years later. Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine is built on the site of his grave.
During the school examination session, students from all over Japan revise for their exams and their parents go to the shrine to pray for their childrens’ success and academic achievement.
The approach to the shrine is lined with souvenir shops and tea houses selling the local speciality called 'umegae mochi' – a type of rice cake. The shrine is famous for its ‘Ume’ (Japanese plum) and 'Tobi-ume' (flying plum) trees, which, according to legend, flew from Kyoto to Dazaifu after Sugawara Michizane.
