Not to be confused with the cat island of the same name, this Aoshima is a beautiful sub-tropical island off the coast of Miyazaki, near the resort beaches in the area. Aoshima is a small island surrounded by a wave shaped rock formation known as 'Oni no sentakuita' (Ogre's Washboard). Aoshima is connected to the mainland via bridge and is surrounded by white beaches with a jungle in the centre. However, the island’s size means the entire circumference of the island is only 1.5 kilometres, making it ideal for a short stroll around. In the centre of the island in the jungle lies Aoshima Jinja or shrine, a location often visited by married couples for whom it is supposed to bring good luck. The stroll to and from this shrine can be quite breath-taking due to the luscious natural surroundings and tranquillity. If you are visiting Miyazaki for a beach holiday or are just passing through, this is one of the real treats in the area and is a recommended visit.
