Gero Onsen is considered one of Japan’s three best onsen along with Kusatsu Onsen and Arima onsen. Located between Nagoya and Takayama city, Gero onsen is only 45 minutes away from Takayama by train, which means it can be a handy place to stay during the Takayama festival when accommodation tends to sell out early. The city receives over one million visitors a year and is therefore a very popular hot spring report, known for its fantastic natural waters which are essential to a good hot spring town.
A ‘Yumeguri Tegata’ (onsen pass) can be purchased for 1,300 yen, (around £10) which allows for admission to three different ryokan’s onsen from a choice of around thirty, so why not try a few out? The pass is available at the information centre located outside JR Gero station or at participating ryokans, and it also makes for a great souvenir. Feel free to buy more than one if you’re a real fan of onsen.
The Gero Onsen Gassho Village is an open-air museum of gassho-zukuri (the style of architecture in which the steep thatched roofs resemble palms placed together in prayer).
