One of the three greatest festivals in Japan has a history of more than 1,000 years.
The various events, including Japanese traditional performing arts such as ‘Kagura Music’ and ‘Bunraku’ are performed during the festival. One of the highlights of the festival is the land procession, which is a parade of some 3,000 people dressed in imperial-court style of the 8th-12th Centuries marching beside ‘Mikoshi (small shrines)’. A boat procession is also held, when the same 3,000 people board 100 boats on the approach to Tenmabashi Bridge and sail upstream.
At dusk, the boats are lit from the light of fires which also illuminate the surroundings. The light being reflected off the river surface creates an exquisite and breathtaking view. Simultaneously, a Tenjin Matsuri Hono Hanabi firework display take place.
The Osaka-style handclapping to close the ceremony is performed when the crowd of 3,000 returns to the Tenman Shrine.
