Yakushima, one of Japan's true natural wonders. This entire island was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status due to its 'outstanding universal value'. If this didn't make it famous enough, it is also known as the inspiration for the exceptionally popular Studio Ghibli movie, 'Princess Mononoke'. If you enjoy nature and hiking, there is perhaps no better destination in Japan to head to than Yakushima. On this four day trip you will be headed to Yakushima from Kagoshima, the nearest port city. The huge and verdant cedar forest contains some of the oldest trees in Japan, known as ‘Yakusugi ’ (cedar trees living for more than a 1,000 years!). The oldest among them is Jomonsugi, believed to be around 7,000 years old. On your journey you too might feel as though you have entered a different period of history.

Yakushima awaits! You will be travelling by jet foil boat to the island, which takes around 2 hours.

Suggested route:
Depart from Kagoshima port to Yakushima by Ferry
e.g. Kagoshima port 13:20 > Miyanoura 15:10

You are free to explore the island. Your hotel for this trip has stunning views over its own garden and the island itself and has its own onsen, perfect for relaxing in after a long day's walking! You're sure to love your stay here.

Today is your first full day on Yakushima.

Our suggestion:
Presumably you are on Yakushima for the nature and the hiking. On your first full day, we encourage you to try out one of the hiking trails through the island, passing Jomonsugi, the giant cedar in the middle of this forest. The longest hike can take up to ten hours, so if you are feeling particularly adventurous make sure you are up very early so you can be back before sunset.

Another day where everything is up to you!

Whatever hiking route you took yesterday, there are more that you can do today. Make sure that you are equipped and capable of the route you decide on! The easiest walk is in Yakusugi land, which has boardwalk paths if you are not a confident hiker.

Alternatively, there are waterfalls on other parts of the island that are relatively easy to get to and very beautiful.
Day 4

After you check out, you are free to explore the island for the last time this trip!
We strongly recommend you don't go for any of the lengthy trails today, as you don't want to miss your ferry. We hope you have enjoyed your trip into one of Japan's most mystical and beautiful places.
