Kotohira-gu Shrine, also known as Kompirasan, is located on the slopes of Mount Zozu in Kotohira town and was built in memory of sailors and seafarers.
Konpirasan is famous for its long staircase- the shrine stands at the end of a long path, with 785 steps to the main shrine and an additional 583 stone steps to the inner shrine Okusha (official name: Izutama Jinja Shrine) - a total 1368 stone steps. It has been one of the most famous Shikoku pilgrimage spots since the dawn of history.
