The Aizu samurai were the highest ranking samurai in the region during the Edo period. This heritage park is a reconstruction complex as the original was burnt down during a war in 1868, but very few complete complexes exist like this in Japan. The house is extremely large, with many different rooms due to the large number of servants and retainers that served these most important samurai. Within the grounds there are gardens, guest rooms, a tea house, a rice mill and even an archery range. Throughout the house there are mannequins engaging in various daily life scenes or historical events. This is a great opportunity to learn about the history of Aizu and the Samurai lifestyle in the Edo period. Nearby there is a hands-on crafts workshop as well as a restaurant serving local cuisine.
