Kiyosumi Teien (清澄庭園) was originally the part of the residence of the great merchant, Kinokuniya Bunzaemon in the Edo period.
In later years, it became as the Edo residence of the daimyo, lord of the Chiba region.
After the Meiji Restoration, Yataro Iwasaki the founder of the Mitsubishi Zaibatsu, obtained it and remodeled the garden for the enjoyment of his employees and to entertain his distinguished guests.
After the Great Kanto Earthquake, it was donated to Tokyo City (current Tokyo Metropolitan Government) and opened to the public in 1932.
